Ken Giles traded to the Houston Astros for 4 Players
The San Diego Padres were able to get four highly-touted prospects from the Boston Red Sox in November for three years of Craig Kimbrel, arguably the best closer in the game. The last couple of months we’ve been adding quite a bit of depth to our bullpen, but many of those players don’t come with a lot of experience and we wanted to make sure we added at least one player who had experience that could help pitch in the late part of the game.
General manager Matt Klentak continues to receive plenty of interest from teams regarding the Phillies’ closer, though he wouldn’t delve into how many teams have inquired about attaining the 25-year-old right-hander. Here he was in his Major League debut a year ago. He struck out 151 in just 115⅔ innings of work. As of now, it’s unclear as to what Philadelphia’s immediate plan is for Velasquez, but he could potentially begin the 2016 season in the starting rotation. Gas-throwing righty Jimmy Cordero and Edubray Ramos, also relievers, were added to the 40-man roster from the minor-league system, and veteran James Russell, yet another reliever looking to bounce back after a down year, was signed to a minor-league contract.
Fisher is an intriguing outfield prospect, although he’s not close to the major leagues.
Listen, I’m not going to sugarcoat this one. Sipp, 32, has been fantastic in his role over the last two seasons, having compiled a 2.66 ERA while fanning 125 over 105 innings.
Velasquez, 23, appeared in 19 games a season ago and made seven starts for the Astros. He’s not a strikeout guy, whiffing 5.9 batters per nine during his career, while walking 2.1.
As of this writing, the fourth player coming to the Phils has not been identified. Fisher, who shares a name with the New York Knicks head coach, was the eighth-ranked prospect in Houston’s organization by Law before last season.
Third, the Astros seem to have moved on from Chapman and made another closer the apple of their eyes.
According to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the Astros are interested in free agent reliever Tony Sipp.
