Kent professor under investigation for helping ISIS
According to the FBI, a professor from Kent State University is under investigation for alleged association with the Islamic state and reportedly the ISIS(ISIL) organization.
“Kent State is fully cooperating with the FBI”, Kent State spokesman Eric Mansfield told WKYC Channel 3 News. KSU will have no further comments at this time.
Faculty members as well as students have been interviewed.
As of now, Pino is still teaching at KSU because he is a tenured professor, and rules about dismissing someone tenured are very strict even while under FBI investigation.
“There is no direct threat to the university”, an Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent who wished to remain anonymous for safety reasons said, as quoted by KentWired.com.
Professor Pino, who has been at Kent State University since 1992, previously made headlines for expressing his opinions about Israel.
KentWired reported that he is a Muslim who converted in 2000 and backs Palestinians in the Israel-Palestine conflict. The investigation has been confirmed by the university.
Pino teaches two classes that focus on Latin America. “I fulfill my duties as an American citizen by speaking out on issues that some people find controversial, of course, but no, I have not violated any USA laws that I am aware of”, Pino said. Pino remains employed by the taxpayer-supported university and it seems he has been emboldened by the cover Kent State is providing for him.
“One of the things he is most known for is shouting “death to Israel” during an Israeli diplomat’s lecture”, said Mills. The agents were familiar with her reports.
Pino also denied any connection to Isis when he was questioned by Mills for her article.
