Kentucky clerk Kim Davis switches to Republican Party
Democrats make up 65 percent of the county’s 14,000 registered voters, but Davis’ switch is not a huge surprise because many Kentucky Democrats still represent the party of decades ago, which was long dominated by rural whites with conservative values.
Asked about her previous conviction, Davis said: ‘I would have stayed in jail until January, until legislation was put in. Since then, Kim has made public appearances with members of the Republican party, including presidential hopefuls Ted Cruz and Mike Huckabee – both of whom joined her as she spoke to supporters when released from jail.
Davis, an elected Democratic clerk in Rowan County, cited her religious beliefs in defying the Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges in June, which legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.
“I was by myself, so I talked to the Lord”, she said.
Despite all of the backlash that Kim has experienced, she has still maintained her county clerk position. The new licenses say they were issued not under the authority of the county clerk, but “pursuant to federal court order”. Bunning ruled those licenses were valid and released Davis on the condition that she not interfere with her employees. They asked Judge Bunning to order Davis’ office to reissue the licenses.
“Kim Davis has made a good-faith effort to comply with the court’s order”, Staver said.
However, Davis could now find herself back in court after Mason alleges that she changed the paperwork to remove the name of the county, his job title, and the space for his signature. “They want her scalp to hang on the wall as a trophy”. She receives an award from the Family Research Council tonight.
Her case captured headlines earlier this month after she was recorded saying “God’s authority” prevented her from giving a marriage licence to gay couple David Moore and David Ermold. But she said that she’s been forgiven, that godly authority trumps all, and that she won’t resign her position. I sang praises to Him to the top of my lungs. I was friends with [Davis] in the past, but I don’t know this woman I’ve been seeing…
