Kenya’s Mary Keitany wins second consecutive women’s NY City Marathon

Hawke ran evenly throughout the race, with a 2:10:30 split at the halfway point and 2:15:00 over the back half. Tufa stuck nearly too close, as Keitany turned and snarled at her for jostling as they ran side by side through the Bronx. This is the third consecutive year that Kenyans – who have now won 22 times since the marathon’s inception – swept both titles. For the men, South African Ernst Van Dyk won the wheelchair division in 1 hour, 30 minutes, and 54 seconds, just one second ahead of the second place finisher, American Josh George.
Perhaps the fiercest competition for Keitany will come from someone who has already beaten her on a major stage.
As an accomplished track and cross country runner, Kipyego knew that the natural progression of her career would eventually take her to the marathon. Josh George, who trains alongside McFadden and Scaroni in Champaign, was just 24 seconds behind in second place. A marathon is not an easy feat even for the fittest celebrities, and they’ve all put in hours of training for the big day.
“We came here for my friend’s 40th birthday and it was devastating what happened”, she said.
“Today it helped me a lot, and I believe in the program”, the 29-year-old Biwott said.
Donna Downing, a Ridgewood, N.J. resident, said the security expo at the entrance was much more welcoming this year, compared to last year.
