Kerryon Johnson explains why he loves the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl
Frost, The Associated Press coach of the year, and his assistants will finish out the season as No. 10 Central Florida (12-0) tries to complete an undefeated season against No. 7 Auburn.
Scott Frost made the decision to coach UCF in the postseason despite taking the Nebraska job on December 2, and Chick-fil-A president and CEO Gary Stokan wasn’t afraid to show his appreciation in advance of the Knights’ matchup with No. 7 Auburn at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on January 1.
While taking a more restrained approach, Auburn players and coaches have emphasized development of younger players and game planning for those on the two-deep. “We really tried to focus on being who we are and doing what we do well”.
For the Chiefs, targeting another running back earlier in the draft may not be on the table, but just thinking about a backfield that features a three-headed monster of Kareem Hunt, Johnson, and a healthy Spencer Ware makes you wonder whether he could be on the table if the Chiefs to get a chance to draft him. They are the No. 1 scoring offense in the country, and they want to show they can do that against the SEC West champ – the No. 7 team in the country.
UCF center Jordan Johnson backed up that comment a few days later.
“I’ve actually never seen that before”.
Even Frost, who accepted the Nebraska head coaching position December 2 but is coaching UCF in the bowl game, wasn’t immune from talking about his opponent, questioning the Tigers’ preparations for the bowl game. “We practiced (last) Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday with nearly an entire staff”.
Johnson didn’t reveal too much on Saturday when asked if he will leave school with a year of eligibility remaining for the National Football League, other than that he will make a decision after the game.
Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn at the Peach Bowl hotel on December 27. “Sometimes people get in college, and it’s kind of like culture shock being around like, ‘Wow, I’m really playing with college players.’ But Kerryon is just one of those guys where it comes easy to him, it comes natural to him”.
“Coach Lindsey does a good job of using me and using me to my strengths”, Davis said. “There are opportunities you have to accelerate that and I think our leaders get that – not just for this year, but for next year as far as a team that is taking the next step that gets the bigger picture of the future of the program”.
Asked if the move to NU has changed how the coaches are viewing this final game with the Knights, Walters said the job change hadn’t taken their focus off of the task at hand one bit.
“But I’ve got a lot of respect for him and he’ll have his team ready”. We’ll see who wins. “So I’m very pleased with the team’s effort”. We was just having fun out there and being with the team and being with UCF, and it was a great event.
Join Coach Malzahn and the seventh ranked Tigers at Mercedes-Benz Stadium as they play tenth ranked and undefeated UCF in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on Monday, January 1. Even though UCF’s offense gets all the accolades that defense has some big talent on it. “There are some holes in their defense, just like every other defense in the country. We plan on attacking them and getting the ball in the air”. But Monday’s stage at Mercedes Benz Stadium, home to the Atlanta Falcons, is different. The game kicks off at 12:30 p.m. and ESPN will broadcast the contest.
“We noticed it. We won’t take too much heat into the talking”.
But offensive coordinator Troy Walters, who is serving under the title of UCF’s interim head coach during bowl preparations, said there was no hesitation among the coaches to finish out what has been one of the most special seasons of their respective careers.
