Kesha blocked from exiting contract with man she claims raped her
Kesha filed the lawsuit in 2014 claiming that Dr. Luke, real name Lukasz Gottwald, physically and sexually assaulted her when she was 18.
The ruling means Kesha is obligated by law to record six more albums with the label, although Dr. Luke did agree to allow the singer to record without his involvement. The judge told Geragos that “decimates your argument”, adding, “My instinct is to do the commercially reasonable thing”. The judge also doubted Kesha’s claims against Dr. Luke, due to her lack of hospital records. In an affidavit included with Kesha’s injunction request, Universal Music Group CEO Jim Urie wrote, “If Kesha can not immediately resume recording and having her music promoted, marketed, and distributed by a major label, her career is effectively over”. Kesha’s attorney claimed that the star had “been on ice for two years” because of her recording contract. The judge, however, has not made the ruling to dismiss the motion.
Kesha’s legal team did not immediately respond to EW’s requests for comment.
The Timber singer had sought an injunction that would have allowed her to record new music outside of Dr Luke’s Kemosabe Records, which lies under the Sony Music umbrella.
Kesha was in attendance in the courtroom with her mother Pebe.
It’s another sad day for Kesha fans as the singer walked away from the courthouse in tears this morning. In 2015, Kesha filed a preliminary injunction to prompt the judge to make a decision on her suit that would cancel her contract with the producer altogether. Prior to the lawsuits, Kesha and Luke weren’t seeing eye to eye when it came to her music career and he denied her from collaborating with other artists like The Flaming Lips.
