Kevin Love opts out of contract with Cleveland Cavaliers
If confirmed, it comes as no surprise that Love will consider his options this summer as even though he has insisted all year that he intends on staying in Cleveland, he may well now choose to meet with other teams.
Love dislocated his left shoulder in Game 4 of the Boston playoff series and was sidelined the rest of the postseason. Love underwent surgery after his shoulder was yanked from its socket by Kelly Olynyk.
Love will likely draw major interest in the free agent market, and the Lakers and Knicks could be potential landing spots for the three-time All-Star.
The Cleveland Cavaliers lost the National Basketball Association Finals 4-2 to the Golden State Warriors, but not due to a lack of effort from LeBron James.
After his injury, Love was asked if he wished to return to Cleveland next season. “Only thing I can control is making sure I’m the best player I can possibly be for whatever organization drafts me tomorrow night”, Towns said Wednesday.
By opting out, Love will be able to sign a deal for next season that would start at $18.9 million.
After opting out, it remains to be seen if Love would still be returning to the team next season.
“Then came Love calling Russell Westbrook the league MVP instead of James, followed by James” playful jab back at Love late in the regular season.
According to the report by ESPN, the Cavs may potentially shop the contract of Brendan Haywood, whose $10.5 million contract would not be guaranteed if he is waived by August 2.
“Yes”, the power forward told ESPN.com on June 5.
There will be more pressing issues for the Cavs after taking care of Mozgov as a number of the players on their roster will become free agents, while LeBron James and Kevin Love both have opt-out options. It may be a long shot, but at least Danny Ainge has a plan in mind for when he takes his shot, rather than shooting blindly.
What we do know now, for the time being, is that Love will indeed opt out.
Pierce, of course, played 15 seasons for Boston, winning the title in 2008, before he was traded to Brooklyn prior to the 2013-14 season. Portland could be in the mix if they lose LaMarcus Aldridge in free agency.
