Kevin Magnussen walks away from crash with nothing but a minor injury
The Dane lost control of his auto as he crested the fast uphill sweep of the Eau Rouge corner and slammed violently into the barriers.
Renault’s Kevin Magnussen has escaped relatively unscathed from a huge crash in Sunday’s Belgian GP.
Magnussen, who started 12th on the grid, got out of the vehicle on his own but was limping slightly.
“He is fully conscious and responsive”, Renault said in a statement.
The 23-year-old Dane limped away and, despite being taken to hospital, it was revealed he sustained only an ankle injury.
The race was red flagged on the 10th lap after a safety auto period was initially called to allow repairs to the barriers, which were heavily damaged in the accident, but subsequently resumed.
There had already been drama at La Source on the opening lap, when Max Verstappen, Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel collided, with all three drivers heading into the pits for repairs.
Lewis Hamilton, who started from 21st on the grid following a raft of engine changes, had incredibly navigated his way to fifth place at the time of the red after negotiating the early drama.
Hamilton leads team mate Rosberg by 19 points in the overall standings, having won six of the last seven races. “It is great to get the win, it is a legendary track career”.
