Kevin McCarthy: I can change Washington
They fear he will continue Boehner’s policy of refusing to fight for conservative policies. Pressing matters include striking a deal with President Obama to keep the government open through the coming fiscal year, raising the federal borrowing limit, passing a long-term transportation bill and extending popular tax breaks.
The interview was Boehner’s first after announcing Friday that he would resign from Congress at the end of October.
But McCarthy still faces potential problems: he is viewed with nearly as much suspicion among conservatives as Boehner, and it is unclear whether he would have any more success uniting the fractured Republican caucus than his predecessor.
In 2014, Sessions easily beat tea party leader Katrina Pierson for re-election, and he’s mobilizing for another tussle. Ted Cruz (R-TX). Cruz led the fight against Obamacare two years ago and is in the forefront of the battle to defund Planned Parenthood.
They have not said whether they will ask for something specific in return for their support. “There are people out there spreading noise about how much can get done”, Boehner said. There were likely multiple factors that contributed to his surprise decision, but were it not for his far-right flank – its obstinacy, its contempt for compromise, its insatiable appetite for confrontation, its ambitions for tearing him down – Boehner would very likely have held onto his Speaker’s gavel through January 2017. He also receives positive ranks from Club for Growth, which champions the conservative wing of the GOP.
McCarthy has been majority leader since 2014, after Virginia’s Eric Cantor lost his Republican primary and resigned the leader post. “There’s no chance of that happening”, McCain told MSNBC. We are a part of the largest Republican majority since 1928.
Mr McCarthy wrote in Monday’s email to Republicans: ‘We can’t ignore the differences that exist, but we can and must heal the divisions in our conference with work, time, and trust’. “Government shutdowns never work”. Within 48 hours, reports were already indicating that McCarthy was moving to secure support and even raising money off his presumed assumption of the speakership. Marco Rubio related the news to a conference of conservatives – who erupted in triumphant hoots.
U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Aurora, who represents a district that is closely divided between Republicans and Democrats, released a statement in praise of Boehner.
Fiorina suggested that McConnell’s leadership, too, has been unsatisfactory.
In John Boehner’s telling, it was just another day at the office: hang out with the pope, enjoy dinner at Trattoria Alberto, get up the next morning, say your prayers, grab coffee at Starbuck’s, gobble down eggs over easy at Pete’s Diner – and oh, by the way, quit your job.
