Outside court Thursday, Young described the ordeal as “unreal”, saying she was at the theater “just doing nothing” when someone tried to kill her.
“Look for the defense to emphasize the fact that James Holmes truly suffers from a serious mental illness, that he is in dire need of ongoing treatment and that while incarcerated he does not pose any real threat or danger to society”, said Steven Pitt, a forensic psychiatrist in Arizona who has followed the case closely. Prosecutors may counter with even more heartbreaking accounts from victims, ranging from those Holmes maimed to the father of his youngest victim, a 6-year-old girl who died in the 2012 attack.

The jury found Holmes guilty of attempted murder in the counts involving Katie and Caleb. He’s now eligible for the death penalty.
Strong emotions come from family and victims as they now turn their attention to the next phase of the theater shooting trial.
On Wednesday, the jury will begin hearing arguments from the prosecution and defense on the sentence they should impose-their options are life in prison without parole and the death penalty. It took almost three more months to choose the jury after 9,000 summonses were sent. It took an hour.
“It would kill again if it was let out”, Teves said as he held a T-shirt with pictures of the 12 people who were killed.
Defence attorney Daniel King presented Holmes, now 27, as a kind of victim himself, of schizophrenia so consuming he was unable to tell right from wrong when he slipped into the auditorium and started shooting, injuring another 70 before his gun jammed and he surrendered.
The same panel must now decide whether Holmes should pay with his life. Dressed in a blue shirt and khakis, and flanked by his public defenders, Holmes stood impassively with his hands in his pockets the whole time.
Jurors reached their decision Thursday after deliberating for about 13 hours over two days.
“He said, ‘Jansen, we have to get down and stay down, ‘” she said.
Starting next week, jurors will hear testimony about Holmes’ mental illness and his childhood. When asked whether he wants to see Holmes executed, Sullivan said: “Yes”.
