KGI’s 10 iPhone predictions: slimmest bezels ever on the OLED model
While this news may be a dampener for many Touch ID fans, it’s at least a better alternate route than the Touch ID integrated at the back of the device (or even on the power key?).
But this year’s iPhone 8 looks set to rip up the rule book once again – with a highly respected analyst predicting it will drop the Touch ID fingerprint recognition system entirely.
Leading up to the launch there have been plenty of rumors, with the latest ones emerging from renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities.
Finally, Kuo expects that, “to maintain its boutique image”, the OLED iPhone 8 will be available in a very limited range of colors.
Apple is developing a feature that would allow users to unlock their iPhones by scanning their face, according to a Bloomberg report. It aligns with the recurring rumours of a “virtual home button” being used on the iPhone 8. Except for this, the iPhone 8 is virtually all-screen with a massive 5.8-inch display panel.
Hours before there was a rumor detailing that the iPhone 8 might not get an in-display fingerprint reader, a new report comes flashing before our eyes stating that the radically changed smartphone might not get this security feature at all. Technologically, the feature draws on more information than the fingerprint-reliant Touch ID, which makes it more secure and it can also log a user into their phone within a few hundred milliseconds.
According to a new report from Bloomberg, the iPhone 8 may ditch the Touch ID sensor altogether in favor of a face scanning feature, made possible by a 3D sensor on the front of the handset.
In his note to his clients, Kuo has claimed that iPhone 8 will come with Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED)-based 5.2-inch (or 5.8-inch, depending on the definition of screen size in use) display. The edge-to-edge display’s only break will be a cutout in the glass to fit in the earpiece, front facing camera, and facial recognition sensor, one of the people said.
Apple fans are pumped for the iPhone 8’s likely unveiling in September. The three new models being released this year will also come with Lightning ports with USB Type-C power deliver circuit for faster charging speeds. “The OLED model will be 5.2″ or 5.8″, while the two LCD phones will be 4.7″ and 5.5”.
The shipments of the three new models are expected to begin in the fiscal year of 2017 and might range around 80-85mn units, with an equal split between OLED & LCD versions.
