Kings acquire Luke Schenn and Vinny Lecavalier in trade with Flyers
It likely wasn’t going to come with the sixth-place Flyers, so on Wednesday the team dealt the 17-year veteran and defenseman Luke Schenn to the Kings for 23-year-old defenseman Jordan Weal and a 2016 third-round pick, the teams announced .
According to a report, the Flyers will retain half of the salaries of both Schenn and Lecavalier. Schenn’s a serviceable, but not remarkable defensive defenseman that has no value in standard fantasy leagues.
That was key in the Kings being able to make the deal for Lecavalier, whose All-Star days are behind him but at 35 was hoping for a fresh start after playing in just seven games this season for the Flyers. His agent told Renaud Levoie of TVA Sports that Lecavalier will retire at the end of the season. Lecavalier would have earned $3 million in salary each season. During his time with the Flyers, since signing with the team in 2013, he has posted 28 goals and 30 assists.
The 26-year-old Schenn has two goals and three assists and is in the final year of his contract. He missed five games with a lower body injury and sat out four others as healthy scratch.
Lecavalier was Lightning captain in their 2004 Stanley Cup season and was drafted first overall in 1998.
The 23-year old Weal was drafted 70th overall in the 3rd round of the 2010 draft by the Kings. He also had 29 points in 19 playoff games last season to lead Manchester to a Calder Cup championship.
