Kings, Koufos agree to 4-year, $33 million deal
The Koufos deal, which can become official Friday, comes a day after the Kings agreed to terms with Rajon Rondo and Marco Belinelli.
The 7-foot, 265-pound Koufos gives Sacramento an experienced backup for DeMarcus Cousins.
That’s a good deal for the Kings.
In 424 career games, Koufos averaged 5.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. It’s not a game changer of a signing, but it’s a quality, smart one. But it’s the price the Kings felt they had to pay in a market where the most coveted free agents go to teams with recent success.
Koufos played in Memphis the last two seasons with the Grizzlies, playing a reserve role to back up big men Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol.
The 28-year-old Koufos was Utah’s first-round pick in 2008 and played three years for the Jazz before being traded to Denver.
The Kings also drafted center Willie Cauley-Stein 6th overall in the 2015 National Basteball Association Draft.
New basketball operations leader Vlade Divac has been left repairing relationships and the roster, with the latter beginning to take shape the past two days. He also could play alongside Cousins or be a competent starter should the Kings trade their All-Star center.
