Kiraly sets record as Hungary beats Austria 2-0 at Euro 2016
With Austria putting more bodies forward, Hungary were finding more space and succeeded to seal the 3 points on the 89th minute when Stieber steamed through on goal and finished behind Almer.
The 53-year-old was delighted at how his players dealt with the pressure during Hungary’s first appearance at a major tournament since the 1986 World Cup.
And the Hungarian fans celebrated long after the final whistle in the streets.
Just moments later, Dynamo Kiev defender Aleksandar Dragovic was sent off for his second bookable offense, leaving Austria with 10 men and a mountain to climb. Everyone is very happy but we have to be concentrated on Saturday, and hopefully we can win that and qualify.
Alaba had another opportunity for Austria in the 10th minute after a wonderful pass from Stoke City’s Marko Arnautovic, but the Bayern Munich full-back fired straight at Gabor Kiraly, who in starting for Hungary, became the oldest player to feature at the European Championships at the age of 40 and 74 days.
Second-half substitution Zoltan Stieber made it 2-0 in the 87th minute when striker Tamas Priskin sent the ball forward and Zoltan Stieber made a solo run to chip it over the head of Austria keeper Robert Almer. We can’t just push a button and say “Now I’m going to play at my best level”.
Storck said: “At the start you need a bit of luck, which we had with the shot from Alaba on the post, but then we were more secure and the players woke up”.
“We should have scored more goals, there is no secret about that”, Santos said.
Kleinheisler then took one shot from distance as Hungary registered an early attempt on target, but it was a comfortable save for Almer.
Narrow home wins against Malta and Albania and home defeats by Turkey and the Netherlands since qualifying may have dented some of the initial optimism but Swiss coach Marcel Koller is expected to persevere with his high-tempo pressing game.
But Austria left the Matmut Atlantique looking like a side who believed too much of their own hype.
Austria’s comeback attempt proved more hard after the 66th minute when the alpine nation went a man down as Dragovic was warned a second time. “I think he’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world”. If his drive had gone in instead of hitting the post 28 seconds into the clash with Hungary it would have been the fastest European Championship goal.
Things went from bad to worse for Austria as they were reduced to 10 men four minutes later.
Kleinheisler was terrific throughout Hungary’s victory, the Werder Bremen midfielder continually positioning himself to receive the ball and making good use of it when it arrived.
