Kirby Smart to stay with Alabama through postseason
McClendon, who turns 32 on December 28, coached Georgia’s running backs the previous six seasons. This will be the 11th consecutive bowl for the Cougars under coach Bronco Mendenhall.
Richt, a former quarterback of the Hurricanes from 1978-1982, was one of four candidates for the job along with former Rutgers University and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano, former Miami and North Carolina head coach Butch Davis, and Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen.
ESPN and the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart was Georgia’s selection late Tuesday night.
“Oh man, I was very thankful for the opportunity, are you kidding me?”
Richt spent the last 15 years at Georgia, winning two Southeastern Conference titles and reaching the 10-victory mark in nine of those seasons.
“When you coach, you want to go to a place where you’ve got a chance to do big things”, Richt said. A source of Bruce Feldman’s said that the school could pay up to $4 million to its head coach, but how much it’ll pay Richt isn’t yet known.
At Maryland, Durkin replaces Randy Edsall, who was sacked midway through the season. “This will be the least disruptive option for our players and staff as they begin preparations for our bowl game”. But once news of the hire hit the web, Hurricanes fans, current players, former players, recruits, and school employees celebrated.
Richt, who was dismissed by Georgia on Sunday after a 9-3 regular season, had one of the most successful and longest runs in program history.
Even if he does not coach Georgia for its bowl game, UM’s interim head football coach, Larry Scott, is expected to coach the Hurricanes in theirs.
“He’s too young to get out and I was thinking how wonderful it would be if he stayed in coaching”, said Bowden, who coached his final game at the age of 80. “I miss coaching quarterbacks, I miss calling plays, I miss that part of it. Whether it’s in the role of head coach, coordinator, quarterbacks coach, whatever it is”.
Beyond that, I’m hesitant to say Miami will be a consistent national title contender like they were in their glory days.
