Kirby Smart Will Stay With Alabama Football Through Playoff
Richt was making $4 million annually at Georgia, where he won 145 games as head coach over the last 15 seasons before the sides parted ways earlier this week.
Richt, in a news conference Monday addressing his future, said he planned to become heavily involved in his team’s offense if he continued coaching.
That man is Richt, the former Georgia coach who agreed Tuesday to rejoin his alma mater. Miami will introduce its new coach on Friday; Richt has reached an agreement to coach the Hurricanes.
ESPN and the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart was Georgia’s selection. Richt was planning to make that his Georgia finale, but the school said he decided otherwise and told his now-former Bulldog players of his decision Thursday. “If it wasn’t offered to me I would have asked for it. I’m very excited about that”.
The University of Miami (UM) is expected to hire Mark Richt as the school’s next head football coach.
This season, the Bulldogs went 9-3 and had four straight wins to close the season, but that wasn’t enough to convince Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity to keep Richt in Athens. It’s possible that Georgia and Miami might meet in a bowl game, though neither team is likely to learn its postseason fate before Sunday. Richt said at the news conference. Look at Texas where Charlie Strong is two years into the rebuild in Austin and has 10 wins to show for it and next year may not result in a bowl game.
Working With The Enemy- Richt began his coaching career in 1985 when he worked as a volunteer quarterbacks coach for the Florida State Seminoles, serving under legendary ‘Noles head coach Bobby Bowden.
Let’s just say “the U” is back, because Richt is back to the place it all started for him as a college player.
While his accomplishments and successes at the University of Georgia are well documented, here are some lesser known fun facts about Richt.
“I’m looking for a name that will bring back people to [Sun Life Stadium]”, the UM trustee said.
Richt was sacked from his job at UGA after 15 years as the head coach. I miss that part of it, whether it’s in the role of head coach, coordinator, quarterbacks coach, whatever it is. Coach Richt has always been a guy I’ve admired, especially as an aspiring coach myself.
