Kirk Cousins will reportedly sign franchise tag, play for Redskins in 2017
However, that information seems largely unsubstantiated and any deal seems like a ways off.
Multiple outlets said Thursday that Cousins requested a trade with Washington owner Dan Snyder.
Cousins was rumored to be seeking a trade out of town and a likely landing spot for him would have been the San Francisco 49ers.
Whether Cousins beseeched Snyder for a trade wasn’t clear.
– ESPN is also reporting that the Buccaneers may be in the driver’s seat to sign DeSean Jackson.
It was a bad day at the office for the Redskins. They would only gain at most a third round compensatory pick in 2019.
Schefter acknowledged that the Redskins may just be playing coy at this point, but added “you can believe them or not, I tend to believe them right now”. If they did, they would fork over the big money it would take to get it done.
If they are unable to make that trade for Cousins – and if Tony Romo goes to Denver – they will try to acquire Trevor Siemian from the Broncos, according to Mike Klis of 9News in Denver. Would he play there $24 million in 2017 if need be? Since Kirk is reportedly interested in coming here, this should be the easy part. McCoy’s best is not going to be better than Cousins has been the past two seasons. He’s been linked to the 49ers and a reunion with former OC Kyle Shanahan, but if that happens it probably won’t be for another season, especially after the 49ers signed Brian Hoyer.
The Redskins still could trade Cousins, but they have yet to give the quarterback any indication that they intend to do so.
Cousins wanting out of Washington is not new news, but now that players are jumping ship, Cousins could be gone one way the other, whether it is this year or next.
