Klinsmann questioned as US slumps to 0-2 start in qualifying
There’s a lot of work to be done before the Honduras match in March when World Cup qualifying resumes. The United States entered Tuesday night hoping to reverse history themselves by notching their first win in Costa Rica and their first result of any kind in the Costa Rican capital of San Jose.
Costa Rica undoubtedly deserves credit for netting four goals (including three in 10 minutes in the second half) against the US. When El Tri lost a few days later in the United States, Tena was replaced within 48 hours by Victor Manuel Vucetich. The American’s have never won in San Jose, amassing eight losses and two ties in World Cup Qualifying.
“When you lose 4-0 there are issues, absolutely”. But the loss to Mexico, keyed largely by Klinsmann’s overly risky decision to change up the U.S.’s formation, and a truly abominable performance on Tuesday in Costa Rica have to make you wonder if Gulati is rethinking that statement.
On top of all this, Jurgen Klinsmann is the technical director of US Soccer along with being the head coach. The U.S. previously lost their opening game against Mexico 2-1 when Rafael Márquez scored the game-winner in the 89th minute of play.
Jurgen Klinsmann did not even attempt to sugarcoat his reaction to the performance of his United States team after their 4-0 humiliation in a World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica on Tuesday. “There’s obviously some concern”. The U.S. has four months between qualifiers – the next coming at home against Honduras in March. The results? Not good and now he’s facing searing criticism about his tactics.
Oscar Ramirez has attempted to temper the expectations created by Costa Rica’s flying start to the Hexagonal round of 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ qualifying and discussed using Joel Campbell as an impact substitute.
“On a night like this there is no point in trying to look at it any other way”.
Because the top three nations qualify and the No. 4 team advances to a playoff against Asia’s fifth-place finisher, there is much room for error. Jozy Altidore, Bobby Wood, Fabian Johnson and Michael Bradley all looked up for the challenge, but there just didn’t appear to be any clear tactical plan in place – not one that was ever going to earn the USA team its first win in Costa Rica. Chandler was picked apart on the right side, as was Omar Gonzalez, who was often left isolated in space against the speedy Johan Venegas and Cristian Bolaños.
Campbell, arguably Costa Rica’s most famous outfield player, once again started on the bench at the Estadio Nacional. Geoff Cameron, who usually starts alongside Brooks, missed both qualifiers this month after hyperextending a knee during Stoke’s Premier League match against Hull on October 22.
Against the Costa Ricans yesterday his team were outplayed and fell behind shortly before half-time when “Los Ticos” went ahead with a soft goal.
In the semifinals of the Gold Cup Jamaica shocked the Americans in the Georgia Dome with a pair of set-piece goals, one of them a free kick from Giles Barnes after Brad Guzan was whistled for handling the ball outside of the penalty area. Two years later the Americans didn’t even make the final.
In his second full year as USA coach, Klinsmann won 16 games – 13 of them in a row – and compiled a.761 winning percentage, all national team records. Despite its best efforts, the US Soccer Federation has failed with the Jurgen Klinsmann Experiment.
