Klopp reveals moment he knew they could beat Arsenal
Adam Lallana played a pass to Divock Origi, who hit the post earlier, and passed the ball to Wijnaldum who made a run through the centre and calmly slotted the ball beyond Cech to make it 3-1.
At Anfield, Arsène Wenger dropped his star player, Alexis, who has turned from a team player into playing exclusively for himself.
Arsenal have suffered repetitive problems with their back four over many seasons, and fans have become disillusioned with their lack of bite in the second half of campaigns. The young Belgian was marginally offside but with no flag raised, he sent in a low cross for Wijnaldum to guide into the back of the net in the 91st minute. Sanchez entered the game in the second half and helped improve Arsenal’s play over the last 45 minutes, confirming Wenger’s blunder.
It looks increasingly likely that Arsenal face a future without Mesut Ozil and Sanchez and as a result the team played against Liverpool as if they were in mourning.
Arsene Wenger’s first trip to Anfield as Arsenal manager was so long ago, Robson and Jerome sat at number one with “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted”. They were absolutely sloppy in defending Liverpool’s breakneck speed counter attacks. It lifted Juergen Klopp’s team into third place in the fight to reach the Champions League.
“And I would go as far as saying that Liverpool are now five years away from winning it, maybe even ten”.
While a large section of Arsenal supporters criticised Wenger for his team selection on Saturday, it appears a number of the Gunners’ squad were backing their manager before the tie.
“Xhaka has been really average, Coquelin has gone backwards and Iwobi’s not a midfielder for me”. For the first, with no midfield player challenging, Laurent Koscielny pushed up to contest a header with Roberto Firmino, which he, a 6’1 centre back, and the “captain” of the side, lost to 5’11 Firmino.
The Sun’s Shaun Custis thinks the decision to leave out Sanchez could be a “defining moment” for Wenger.
Managers and players from both sides are under huge pressure coming into this fixture, however none more so than Wenger, who is already rumoured to be on the way out of a club that many feel he built.
Wenger’s choice seemed based on emotions over hard facts as the snide rejection of the Chilean backfired as the Gunners finished the day in fifth position.
