Knicks agree to deal with Brandon Jennings
With Jennings only signed to a one-year deal (and Rose in the final year of his contract)-this allows the Knicks to have more salary-cap space available for next summer, when Oklahoma City point guard Russell Westbrook will be a free agent.
Jennings Tweeted he was coming to the Knicks.
He ruptured his Achilles in 2015 with the Pistons. He played 23 games for the Pistons this past season, averaging 18 minutes, 6.8 points and 3.0 assists before he was traded to the Magic on February 16 with forward Ersan Ilyasova for forward Tobias Harris. His acquisition not only represents another roster upgrade, but the filling of another massive (and quite obvious) void from last year’s team. Considering Rose’s lengthy injury history, Jennings is in a good spot to see extended playing time down the road should anything happen to the Knicks’ new starter.
If they stay healthy, the Knicks will have fulfilled new coach Jeff Hornacek’s goal of upgrading the point guard spot. As they look to continue filling out the roster (be it this offseason, or filling a sudden void later in the fall), they’ll likely need to explore more affordable options. Not eye-boggling numbers, yet Jennings should be a solid fit in NY as Derrick Rose’s primary backup.
