Ko finishes third at British Open
Park had to jump over a variety of different players on the leaderboard.
Fellow South Korean Ko Jin-young, 20, carded a 71 to finish second on nine under in her major debut. She attempted to go for the flag stick, but left her shot in the bunker. The 20-year-old’s approach to the 16th found a water hazard and led to a double-bogey 6. That put her tied in third.
The win gives Park an incredible six wins in the last 14 majors, including the LPGA Championship in June. Webb was 26 when she completed the haul in 2001.
Heavy rain, strong winds and cold temperatures made for tough conditions for the players, with just two posting under par rounds during an especially challenging second round.
The South Korean claimed her seventh major at Turnberry. Park finished on 12-under 276.
While the rest of the field struggled, Inbee shined.
But she eagled the 14th, birdied the 16th and finally unnerved her young compatriot.
Park’s birdie putt on No. 18 lipped out, but it didn’t matter. But she then reeled off four straight birdies from the seventh through the 10th.
The first is the Career Grand Slam of the four established events, which is what they’re saying Inbee won by taking the British title yesterday. Park becomes the seventh player to win the Career Grand Slam. “This is the greatest day of my life, for sure”, said Park. Park said after the round. “It was a great day of golf today”. Ko had never played links golf before this week. “The golfing gods were on my side”.
Park began the week with sourness in her back, but it did not seem to bother her on Sunday.
“Likewise for players who win four consecutive majors in a single season, the LPGA will acknowledge them as having accomplished a Grand Slam”. It didn’t look great earlier in the week. To hold this trophy at the end feels real great.
Merritt gets first win: Troy Merritt won the Quicken Loans National on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title, closing with a 4-under 67 for a three-stroke victory over Rickie Fowler in Gainesville, Virginia.
In men’s golf history, only six tournaments have ever been considered majors, including the four current professional majors and the U.S. Amateur and British Amateur championships. “I played with Lydia [Ko] today, Inbee Park and Lexi [Thompson] this week so it was nice to contend in a major”.
It is also now unquestionably true that her achievements stretch beyond the women’s game: She is just 27 years old, and only Tiger Woods and Wright won seven majors at a younger age.
A shot further back on level par, England’s Hannah Burke tied for 17th place while earlier on the final day, Danish Ladies European Tour rookie Nanna Koertz Madsen equalled the course record of 65 and tied for 21st on one over par.
