Kobe Bryant: Scott won’t cut down on Kobe Bryant’s minutes
Kobe Bryant’s struggles this season have been sad to watch for fans of the Los Angles Lakers and Golden State Warriors players alike. “My shooting will be better, we’ll be better”. It wouldn’t have made a damn difference. The 37-year-old is averaging 30.5 minutes per game, but red flags were raised when he logged 35 and 36 minutes in consecutive games last week.
“Coming down offensively & not having a concept of what we’re trying to do”. His selfish habits on and off the court are only hurting the young future Lakers core. “I am concerned about his shooting percentage. You got to have a solid follow-through so that each shot is as smooth and as repetitive as possible”, he says.
Making matters worse: The 17-time All-Star is stuck in the past, a notion which has been perpetuated by the fact that Bryant is surrounded by yes-men, starting with his head coach and former teammate Byron Scott.
“I’m not really anxious about it, honestly”.
“I know his mentality is that he still feels that he can still play in this league, and we feel the same way”, Scott said. The 2-12 squad is now 29th in the league in offensive efficiency and 27th in defensive efficiency, scoring just 96.4 points per 100 possessions and allowing 107.3 points per 100 possessions.
“Wow! This is a turnaround from the reports that this would be Kobe’s last season”.
How do you coach a player that has played 20 seasons?
Scott said he spent part of Wednesday’s two-hour practice talking about needing better ball movement. Smith added, “there was no point waiting till the end of the season”.
After the game, Kobe Bryant also expressed disappointment regarding his performance.
In Scott’s defense here, his job is to win games now and in order to do that he has to put the guys on the floor who he believes give him the best chance to do that. The five-time NBA champ is often compared to basketball icon Michael Jordan due to his competitiveness and partially because of his identical moves with his “Airness”. Kevin Garnett is playing less minutes in Minnesota so why can’t Kobe. Lakers fans wanted to see Russell in fourth quarters so that he can learn what it is like to play in crunch time since they had nothing else to lose but at the beginning of the year Scott was not obliging.
