Kohli, Pujara put England on backfoot on Day 1 of Vizag Test
In the 2nd Test, KL Rahul failed to convert his Ranji Trophy form in first innings and got out on zero in only the second over of the match.
“They did it in Rajkot, but there was a massive score on the board and they weren’t under pressure”, Vaughan, who led England between 2003 and 2008, told Test Match Special.
“That’s just the way it’s turned out and I’m happy”.
Yet the fact they were sandwiched by a third-wicket partnership of 226 runs meant England greeted his dismissal of Pujara in the evening session more with wearied relief than celebration.
He played his strokes and hit two sixes including one over midwicket to get to his 11th Test century while Kohli was seen batting in a sedate manner and did not take hit a single six. But the shot of the morning came off Anderson when the skipper gently timed one past the diving mid on fielder. He likes to dominate.
“The way we are placed at the moment, I think anything above 500 will be a good total for us”, Pujara, whose ton was his third in as many tests, said.
“I’m enjoying my batting, I tried to stay positive”, Ashwin said.
Speaking about the miscommunication between the wickets which nearly cost Pujara his wicket on two separate occasions, he said: “It was there, but we spoke about it during lunch, and it was much better in the second session”. But the mood in the England camp changed immediately a ball later as Kohli, who was on strike due to the single taken after the drop, was caught by Stokes at first slip for 167.
“During the lunch break, we spoke about accelerating”.
Opener Haseeb Hameed and Joe Root resumed post-tea, and were untroubled in adding 47 runs for the second wicket until Hameed was run out on 13 after Root refused a second run.
Asked whether his shoulder has fully recovered, Anderson said in a lighter vein: “To be honest I haven’t thought about the shoulder, it’s the rest of my body that’s in pieces right now”. The rehab has gone well, when I came back to bowling I progressed really quickly. “It’s about understanding the situation not the partners”. Although he’s not played a Test match here, in one-day [internationals] he’s got a wonderful record at this ground and he won a good toss on an excellent pitch. I don’t know how it will shape tomorrow. From India’s point of view, they would like to make a big first innings score so that they don’t have to bat again. Live coverage of day two begins at 3.45am on Friday morning on Sky Sports 2 and across our digital platforms.
