Kopitar’s OT goal gives Kings 2-1 win over Wild
The Minnesota Wild have little time to recover from a hard-fought victory as they continue their three-game road trip Friday against the Los Angeles Kings. The Wild had two more power plays, including one that came with 2:03 remaining, but the Wild couldn’t find that go-ahead goal. Minnesota netminder Darcy Kuemper stopped 35 of 37 shots as the Wild (3-0-1) had its three-game winning streak stopped. Los Angeles won two of its three meetings last season with Minnesota, incuding the lone contest at Staples Center on October. 19, 2014.
Kings goalie Jonathan Quick, who struggled in his first two games, had a second consecutive solid effort (25 saves) against Minnesota, which played the night before in Arizona and looked flat until the third period.
Pivotal performers: The Kings’ power-play unit ended a 0-for-14 drought to start the season when Tyler Toffoli scored 1:13 into the second period, giving his team a 1-0 lead. The Kings took five penalties in the game and the game-tying goal was scored by Koivu on the power play. Though he let in a power play goal, he still turned away 10 shots plus another with the man advantage.
The Wild were able to muster just enough energy to tie the game in the third period to secure a point in a game where it really had no business in. Forbort attempted a shot in 11:33 of ice time. The Kings have never had a 0-4-0 start.NOTES: Kings RW Dustin Brown moved past Rob Blake for sole possession of fourth place on the franchise’s all-time list of games played with 806….
