Kozak wins third gold for Hungary
Usain Bolt bid a blazing-fast farewell to Rio de Janeiro, and probably the Olympics altogether, Friday night with yet another anchor leg for the ages.
It was the third consecutive Olympic 4x100m gold medal for Jamaica.
Nine Olympic races. Nine gold medals.
Canada were elevated to bronze after their run of 37.64, a national record which gave Andre de Grasse his third medal of the Games after a bronze in the 100m and silver in the 200m.
Team GB’s Richard Kilty, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, James Ellington and Adam Gemili could only manage a sixth-place finish after struggling to keep pace with the leading pack.
Bolt produced his first truly jaw-dropping moment on the global stage as he stormed to his first Olympic title in a then world record of 9.69 seconds.
“I hope I’ve set the bar high enough that no one can do it again”, said Bolt whose departure is a second blow to the Olympics after the retirement of swimming legend Michael Phelps with his 23 career golds.
The 30-year-old, who has won three world relay titles alongside Bolt, is thought to have tested positive for the stimulant methylhexanamine.
“And they did exactly that, I had no work to do, just to run to the line”.
“There you go”, Bolt said.
“I haven’t got a call yet but I know it’s coming”, he joked in July following Jose Mourinho’s appointment as the English Premier League club’s manager.
Meanwhile, back in Brazil, a witness told the Globo network that the Americans were “terrified” by the situation and the International Olympic Committee said the athletes will face a disciplinary commission. The champion has won gold in all the events he participated in since the Beijing Olympics in 2008. “I will encourage him to come back for 2020”. I felt exhausted, I lost my form in the last part of the race.
As for the Americans, it looked like the Team USA was set to pick up a medal in this event for the first time since 2004, but they were disqualified because the first handoff between Mike Rodgers and Justin Gatlin was deemed to have occurred outside the exchange zone.
“It was hard because the weather wasn’t that good”, Liu said of the hot conditions.
It was the ninth time since 1995 that the USA team has been disqualified from a relay at an Olympics or world championship.
One of Bolt’s overlooked accomplishments is how he buried US male sprint dominance. That’s what I came here to do. I’m just proud of myself.
“It’s mixed feelings. It’s a relief, because it’s really stressful, I’ve had injury problems, but I’m also sad that I have to leave, this is my last one”. However, Bolt’s teammates were undoubtedly a huge help in his gaining that “triple triple” medal victor title as they ensured that each baton pass was as smooth as possible and for the most part, maintaining a lead on each leg of the journey. To win gold, Jorgensen ran 6.2 miles, swam a mile in the ocean and cycled 24 miles in 1 hour, 56 minutes, 16 seconds. I told the guys: “Don’t give me too much work to do please”, and they did exactly that. Bromell fell across the finish line with an injured Achilles and a third-place finish.
In Lane One, the inside, where physics says it is toughest – with 41.01 the second-fastest women’s 4x100m relay in Olympic history.
As that 2015 relay proved, the only way to beat the green-and-gold Jamaican team is to build up such a large lead by the fourth and final leg that no one could overcome it.
Even though it took Bolt less than 20 seconds to complete the half-lap at the Olympic Stadium, people are likely to remember his accomplishments for generations in what has been a stellar career.
