NORTH CHARLESTON, South Carolina – Residents in a predominantly black North Charleston neighborhood say fliers claiming to be from the Ku Klux Klan have showed up in the past week.
The Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan announced in June that the group would hold a rally at the South Carolina State House on July 18 as Haley and other lawmakers called for the Confederate flag to be removed from State House grounds in wake of the Charleston Church shooting. “The government, instead of being for the people and what the people want, they take it upon themselves to make the decision for us”, said KKK Imperial Kommander Amanda Lee. The State reported that the Black Educators for Justice applied for their permit to demonstrate 10 days after the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.
Riverside Community Church had scheduled a prayer rally at the same time Saturday on the east side of the State House.
The KKK planned the rally several weeks ago in the midst of the Confederate flag debate. The victims included its pastor, state Sen.
“Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin echoed the Governor and promoted the twitter hashtag, ‘IgnoreThem”, which is something many residents said they plan to do.
