Ku Klux Klan fliers show up in South Carolina neighborhood
The Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, a Pelham, North Carolina-based chapter that bills itself as “the largest Klan in America”, expects about 200 people to attend its demonstration, planned from 3 p.m.to 5 p.m.
Charleston NAACP chapter president Dot Scott said the threats have become so commonplace at the Columbus Street office that staffers have quit answering the phones.
Williams and others hope to see more symbols of unity in their neighborhood instead of divisive pieces of paper like those left behind by the KKK. Sheriff Al Cannon will be joined by representatives of the Charleston, North Charleston and Mount Pleasant police departments, the State Law Enforcement Division and the FBI, according to the announcement.
State lawmakers proposed the debate in the aftermath of a race-related shooting at a historic black church in Charleston where nine black worshipers were killed. “Let our hearts, you know, get rid of the pain and let’s do something productive and not this silly stuff of whatever they’re trying to do, the KKK or whatever”, she said.
He said that in some cases, people have been taken into custody, would not go into specifics about threats made or whether any charges have been filed, citing ongoing investigations. He encouraged the public to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement to help further the investigation. But she says she wants to move forward after the events of the past few weeks.
