Kuwait Olympic body to be suspended by the IOC over government interference

The General Assembly revived the tradition in 1993 and has adopted resolutions before the summer and winter Olympic games since then, but countries have continued fighting wars whether the Olympics are on or not.

The full Commission is composed as follows: IOC Members Sergey Bubka – who was Chair of the Singapore 2010 Coordination Commission – Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, Secretary General of the Turkish Olympic Committee and Member of ANOC Executive Council Nese Gündogan, CEO of Lillehammer 2016 Tomas Holmestad and FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis.

Until now, Bach said, qualified refugee athletes were not able to participate because they couldn’t represent their home country and its national Olympic committee.

Bach appealed to all 193 United Nations member states to help the International Olympic Committee identify talented refugee athletes. “The global Olympic Committee is demanded to prove the contrary (in order to justify the recent FIFA decision to bar Kuwait from worldwide football events); we will ask them (the IOC) when we meet in Kuwait”, the minister told reporters Sunday night.

The proposal will form part of the Olympic Truce resolution, an initiative led by the worldwide Olympic Committee (IOC) that is adopted by the UN General Assembly in the year before each edition of the Games. “This will be a symbol of hope for all the refugees in our world, and will make the world better aware of the magnitude of this crisis”. “Through the Olympic Games, the Brazilian people will remind the world of their unique combination of passion and efficiency”.

The Olympics are set to take place from August 5 to 21, 2016, while the Paralympic Games will be held from September 7 to 18, 2016.
