Kyle Edmund to make Davis Cup debut
Not only will Edmund make his debut in the competition on the biggest stage of all but he will also get the final underway, as he faces world No. 16 David Goffin in the opening singles on Saturday.
The Davis Cup final is being held in Ghent from Friday to Sunday and the 13,000-seat Flanders Expo is sold out for all three days of the final, with more than 1000 British fans due to attend.
“Considering the fact that Andy Murray is in the team, everything he has done for Great Britain this season in Davis Cup, it’s fair to say that Great Britain is favourite with him in the team”, Djokovic said, reports Tennis.
Edmund responded to that, and other insinuations about his lack of a track record, by saying: “In sport you want to play, especially for your country”.
Smith must name his four-man team prior to Thursday’s draw, with Edmund and Ward waiting to discover which of them has earned the second singles berth. “Had that not happened – you need doors to open and you need to commit yourself to the job and I did that”.
“Even with experience or no experience, whoever plays is going to be nervous because it’s a Davis Cup final”.
Andy Murray has said “I think once we got here and got into the hotel, came to the venue and saw what it was like here, I think that made everyone a lot more comfortable”.
“You just deal with it when it comes to it”.
“When I addressed the players for the first time, “A well prepared team on a journey back to the World Group” was the slogan I wrote up on the board”. He’s number two of the world, so it’s going to be very tough.
Britain will try to win the competition for the first time since 1936 when they face Belgium in Ghent from Friday.
Scheduled for now, Goffin will play the first reverse singles against Murray while Bemelmans will likely play 20-year-old Edmund in the last rubber on Sunday.
