Kyle Long Sums Up Green Bay Packers Victory Over Detroit Lions Perfectly
Rock Rodgers has always been known for one of the most exciting plays in football history. They also would have had defenders in front of the end zone, instead of playing behind the Packers receivers.
Richard Rodgers Sr. had to like what he saw of his son’s winning catch on the all-University of California connection.
There should have been no facemask called on Devin Taylor on Thursday night, yet there was a flag, just as the Lions had beaten the Green Bay Packers to stay alive in a wild NFC playoff race.
The Packers started James Starks in the game, which head coach Mike McCarthy chalked up to Lacy not having “a great week”, which seems to fall in line with another ESPN report that suggested Lacy and Alonzo Harris, who was cut hours before the game, missed a mandatory curfew Wednesday night.
“I’m not real happy when the offense gets the ball”, the Green Bay coach said.
“Everyone tries to get to the end zone”. “If you look at it, from my perspective, Rodgers throws it to Rodgers”.
“We had plenty of guys back there”. So Detroit didn’t bother putting Calvin Johnson in to defend a heave to the end zone.
It’s weird enough that the Packers came back from a 20-0 deficit, and that they were even in that deep of a hole to begin with, and that they won it when a guy named Rodgers threw to a guy who was also named Rodgers (that was Richard). But the Detroit penalty extended the game and Green Bay pulled off the miracle. But as far as desperation plays go in the 21st century, this one – a 61-yard touchdown strike – was completely unique. “I think he got me”.
One play did cost the Lions a game Thursday night, but should it have? However, when the Broncos let Knowshon Moreno walk and tabbed Ball as the new starter, he fell to pieces, rushing for just 172 yards and averaging a miserable 3.1 yards per carry in 2014. The Green Bay tight end lateraled the ball back to his quarterback to “set up” the questionable(?) facemask call preceding the untimed Hail Mary play.
As in, we don’t really know what it is now.
While many people will be pointing fingers at the officials for giving the Packers a free play, the Lions did happen to blow a 20 point lead at home. Golden Tate caught eight passes for 63 yards in the loss. The penalty gets called and then Rodgers throws it back to Rodgers again. But Aaron Rodgers had the ball in the air for roughly 70-yards.
Now Detroit’s three-game winning streak is over, and the best the Lions (4-8) can hope for is a. 500 record. We’ll have to talk about that some other time, because it’s one of the stupidest things I have ever seen.
Jordy Nelson, the Packers Pro Bowl receiver who is out for 2015 with a knee injury, delves into how the game-winner worked.
