Kyle Schwarber headed back to Cubs, report says
The Cubs will recall the MVP of Sunday’s All-Star Futures Game from Triple-A on Friday to replace injured catcher Miguel Montero, MLB.com reports. During that stretch, Schwarber hit.
Schwarber appeared in six games during that stint, going 8 for 22 at the plate (.364) with a triple, a home run and six RBIs.
Schwarber is expected to back up David Ross and Taylor Teagarden. He does have experience playing the outfield in the past as well.
All Kyle Schwarber has done at every stop of his professional career is hit, and hit a ton, and that held true in his brief major-league cameo earlier in the season.
This is the damage Schwarber has done through his first 147 games in the minors:.333 average, 34 homers, 102 RBI and a 1.042 OPS.
Montero is scheduled to see a hand specialist on Friday and will be sidelined for at least 15 days. He’ll be worth starting in all standard fantasy leagues for however long he’s up.
So now that we have the bad news out of the way, there is some good news.
Speaking in mid-June, Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein kept open the possibility that Schwarber could play in the outfield – though he spoke with a healthy Montero in mind at the time. Maybe he is a factor for September up here.
