‘La La Land’ wrongly announced as Oscars winner
As those involved with the movies up for the Best Picture award at Sunday’s Oscars were sitting on pins and needles, most people at home were just ready for the show to finally end.
“Even in my dreams this can not be true”, said an astonished Jenkins, once he reached the microphone. However, as producer Jordan Horowitz soon found out – having got up on stage to collect the trophy – the accolade was actually meant to go to Moonlight instead. After all, he was handed the wrong envelope before presenting the Academy Award.
Speaking after the ceremony, Emma Stone described massive mishap “strange”. I’m so excited for Moonlight.
“I think everyone’s in a state of confusion still”, said Stone. It was one of those things that gets thrown at you. “I thought, ‘This is very odd because it says Best Actress on the card.’ And I felt that maybe there was some sort of misprint”.
Emma – whose name was on the duplicate card that was read out – also spoke about the huge gaffe following the mix-up, saying: “Moonlight is one of the great films of all time”.
“I was holding my best actress in a leading role card the entire time”.
“I read the card that was in the envelope”, the actor said. “The incident saw Warren Beaty and Faye Dunaway, who were announcing the victor, being given the wrong envelope, one containing the victor of the previous category (Emma Stone, ‘La La Land” for Best Actress).
“The last 20 minutes of my life have been insane”. (Voice trails off as he looks at the card again) For Best Picture…. While the cast and crew took what they thought to be their rightful place on the Oscar stage, some even beginning to give thoughtful and emotional acceptance speeches, something was obviously amiss.
The greatest awards show scene ever features Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, Kimmel and the producers of “La La Land” and “Moonlight” trying to figure make sense of how the wrong movie had been named as the big victor. Oh no! You won hearts, La La Land A little morbidity to darken the mood.
“This is no joke”.
Why Beatty was holding the victor of the category that had already been announced prior to the Best Picture category is a mystery that will be solved in the wave of pieces about this incredible bit of Oscar history tomorrow.
All joking aside, Dunaway and Beatty were pictured at the Governers Ball afterparty.
