Labour leader says would not push nuclear button as PM
Jeremy Corbyn has insisted Labour is the true anti-austerity party on his first visit to Scotland since being elected leader.
Nuclear weapons ‘didn’t do the US much good on 9/11, ‘ Jeremy Corbyn has said following an interview in which he ruled out ever authorizing the use of Trident nuclear weapons if he becomes prime minister in 2020.
But Ms Eagle was in turn criticised by Diane Abbott, the Shadow worldwide Development Secretary, who said on Twitter: “Surprised that Maria Eagle criticises JC for making his position clear on Trident nuclear weapon system”.
“The independent nuclear deterrent that we have in Britain is a vital insurance policy for our nation in what is a very risky world”, the Prime Minister told reporters during a visit to Jamaica.
He still believes renewing the Trident nuclear weapons programme is wrong, but it might not be party policy.
“That is eight countries out of 192”.
“And what I don’t want to see is the Labour party’s job description being changed from being either a party of government – or at least contesting elections seriously to become a party of government – to being satisfied with just being a protest movement. I believe it is possible”.
For Corbyn, who has sat on the “backbenches” of the Labour Party – far away from its leading policy makers – for more than 30 years, differences of opinion are to be welcomed.
“There has to be an end to the fighting”.
Moscow launched its first air strikes in war-torn Syria on Wednesday after President Vladimir Putin won parliamentary permission to use force overseas.
“Maybe a few progress has been made on that. So don’t look at immigration as necessarily a problem – it’s often a very great opportunity”.
But pressed on whether he would concede defeat on the issue, Mr Corbyn said: “If I can’t, we’ll live with it somehow”.
During the Labour Party conference in Brighton it was revealed that large chunks of the leader’s speech were actually written in the 1980s by the speechwriter Richard Heller.
“This is obviously a central and crucial issue”.
In his speech, Mr Corbyn said: “I’m delighted that Lucy Powell is our new shadow education secretary”. “I’m all for debate but ultimately we are going to have to have settled positions on things if people are to know what it is they are voting for”, said Chuka Umunna, Labour’s former business spokesman.
The new Labour strongman and scarecrow of the political establishment Jeremy Corbyn might be derided for his appearance, attire and archaic speech, but he certainly understands about spin.
“We need a credible opposition to the Tories and the SNP is providing that north and south of the Border”. We have a £100 billion trade deficit at the present time.
