Labour MPs attack Jeremy Corbyn after reshuffle
Emily Thornberry, who like Corbyn is a London MP and opposed to the replacement of the Trident nuclear defence system, has been installed as Shadow Defence Secretary.
Ms Eagle was in favour of renewing Trident, putting her at odds with Mr Corbyn, who has argued that the more than £100 billion (€137 billion) cost to replace the country’s deterrent could be better used.
The Durham North MP also claimed Maria Eagle had wanted to remain Shadow Defence Secretary.
Earlier this week Michael Dugher, who was sacked from the culture job, claimed that he was too “honest and straight-talking” for Mr Corbyn. His sacking last night was said by senior Labour sources to reflect his “incompetence and disloyalty”.
Prolonged talks between Mr Corbyn and Hilary Benn led to the Leeds Central MP retaining his post as Shadow Foreign Secretary.
The ousted MP said this week that the front bench reshuffle had hindered the prospect of the “new politics” promised by Mr Corbyn, whose promises that “room for a little dissent” had proved unreliable.
Mr Jones, Jonathan Reynolds and Stephen Doughty quit within the space of 90 minutes, citing differences with their leader on key policy issues and the treatment of their colleagues.
So after a 30 hour reshuffle – which resulted in two sackings and one moving chair – is Jeremy Corbyn weakened or has he ensured he got his way?
Briefings suggested his former boss Ms Eagle had taken on her “dream” role as shadow culture secretary.
Mr McFadden had criticised the views of the Stop The War Coaltion – with which Mr Corbyn is closely associated – in the wake of the Paris atrocities, a move that the leader is said to have taken as a personal attack.
He will be replaced by Pat Glass, a pro-Europe former junior education spokeswoman.
However, I have always seen your election as Labour leader as a catalyst for the Labour party to have a wide debate about its future and policy positions.
“I know he will continue be a strong advocate for fairness and social justice in parliament and will serve the people of Stalybridge and Hyde vigorously from the backbenches”. The party needs to worry more about places it needs to win back, like Scotland, and northern regions where it is under threat from other parties like Ukip.
“My great failing in life is to listen to everybody at whatever greater length they wish to speak to me”, he said.
Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron mocked Corbyn’s “revenge reshuffle” in their exchanges in the House of Commons on Wednesday.
In his letter to Mr Corbyn, Mr Reynolds says he understands that Mr Corbyn felt he had to make changes to the top team but adds he does not feel he can work on the frontbench any longer.
After Labour lost office at the 2010 General Election, Eagle was elected to the Shadow Cabinet and spent three years as Shadow Transport Secretary before being appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
But many Labour lawmakers see his leadership style as ineffectual, his policies as out of touch with voters’ views and his commitment to party reform as hollow.
