Labour Party Conference: Corbyn calls for “fairer society” in speech
Labour is holding a conference in the southern resort town of Brighton, its first since Corbyn took over the leadership with a stunning election victory earlier this month over better-known and more centrist party figures.
Mr Corbyn said: “We will learn the lessons of the past and we will make Labour the great fighting force you expect us to be”.
While moderates in the party have said they will respect his mandate, there are several policy areas where he is at odds with many fellow lawmakers, including over the renewal of Britain’s Trident nuclear deterrent and membership of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
Back in the hall, Mr Corbyn received a standing ovation after his first speech to conference.
The left-wing leader shied away from radical points of view and proclaimed his love of Britain and British values.
“I was pleased with everything he said about taking the fight to the Government”.
He added: “So it was a good start – I am still not sure he is the man to deliver those values but I hope he does”.
She said the feeling among delegates was that these are “interesting and exciting” times for the Labour party.
“We will force people like Starbucks, Vodafone, Amazon and Google and all the others to pay their fair share of taxes”, said McDonnell, a hard-left former trade unionist who has in the past advocated renationalising banks and imposing wealth taxes. And I believe I have a mandate from my election on it.
In a statement ahead of the speech, the ruling Conservative party of Prime Minister David Cameron called Labour’s policies “a threat to our national security, our economic security and your family’s security”.
This was a sign of his declaration that even as Labour leader he would never stop being a campaigner.
Mr Corbyn made clear he would not support the expansion of grammar schools ahead of the government’s announcement on whether to give the green light to a new annex in Sevenoaks.
“The Tory austerity is the outdated and thoroughly failed approach of the past, ‘ Corbyn said, accusing the Conservatives of telling a ‘lie” by saying they were on the side of British workers.
He said: “They protect the few and tell the rest of us to accept what t we are given”.
From the transcript of the speech McDonnell said: “There will be cuts to the billion pound tax breaks given to buy to let landlords for repairing their properties, whether they undertake the repairs or not”. “And certainly not when it comes from Cameron and Osborne”.
Labour in Scotland will be a fighting force once again the new United Kingdom party leader has declared.
