This has been speculated for a while, a move linking Pirlo away from Juventus and linking him with MLS side, NYCFC, who now have Lampard, David Villa and now Pirlo.

For Angelino and Andoni Iraola, this is the first time either player have joined a new club during the midway point of the team’s season.

Seven months ago, it was expected that he would make his debut much earlier than that date but Manchester City opted to extend his contract until the end of the 2014-15 Premier League season.

Lampard will play alongside the likes of David Villa and Andrea Pirlo at the Yankee Stadium, and the ex- Chelsea man is eagerly anticipating linking up with the decorated duo.

However, he said he would not be following Beckham in returning to play for England from the MLS if called upon.

Lampard said he was looking forward to renewing the rivalry he shared with Steven Gerrard, who has signed for LA Galaxy. “I work hard. If I can do that, then none of us will have any debts to pay so we can all be happy”.

He told NYCFC.com: “I have been wanting this experience for a long time and now that the opportunity materialised I wanted to take it. This is a club on the rise and shares my same hunger to achieve important results in the League”. His first introductory press conference was nearly one year ago, with a stated goal of playing for NYCFC at training camp in January. But now, it seems that the Chelsea legend regrets making the move.

It was Villa’s free-kick that handed New York victory against Montreal at the weekend, but both Lampard and Pirlo have made their names as something of set-piece specialists during thier illustrious careers.

Lampard, who is staying at a hotel adjacent to Central Park until he finds a permanent home, said he has been received warmly by his teammates, coaches and the fans he encounters in the New York streets.

He understands he can keep it that way by impressing on the field.

“Well, I’ve not done the subway yet”, he said with a smile. “I would not have come here if I did not think I had a lot left in me”. I’m a pretty straight person, I think.

“It has been very easy for me to fit in and I’ll be quick to make friends and ingratiate myself in the dressing room”.
