Landry Jones Throws First NFL Touchdown Pass vs. Cardinals
He never dressed for a game during his first two seasons in the league and the only reason he was dressed against the Arizona Cardinals was because starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger missed his third consecutive game with a knee injury.
But if Pittsburgh needs a fill-in quarterback for this weekend’s visit to the struggling Chiefs, it will likely be Jones, not Vick (who has a “tiny tear” in his hamstring, via NFL Network).
Clinging to a 20-17 lead late in the game, San Diego (2-3) watched Michael Vick and Co. steal one on the game’s last play, as Pittsburgh (3-2) escaped Southern California with a 24-20 victory.
Of course, Kinkhabwala’s tweet leaves the door slightly open for Vick to suit up on Sunday, but considering Jones outperformed Vick on the way to a victory, it’d be surprising if he dressed in anything more than an emergency role.
The man, the myth, the newly-born legend Landry Jones started the next drive at quarterback.
Dominated for a half, the Steelers rallied for a 25-13 over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday led by two players who have spent part of their young careers buried in the doghouse, on the depth chart or both. “After we scored the first touchdown, it was like a confidence booster”.
John Brown put up monster numbers Sunday, but the second-year wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals was fixated more on what he failed to do. The Steelers intercepted Carson Palmer once, though he did throw for over 200 yards in the half. He took advantage of the opportunity to finish with 168 passing yards and two touchdowns on 8-of-12 passing. Yet Arizona only led 10-3 at the break after having a touchdown wiped out on an offensive pass interference penalty, letting a second-and-3 at the Pittsburgh 25 turn into a punt and allowing the Steelers to hang around far too long.
Steelers offense earns a positive grade: B+.
Chris Boswell would get the Steelers on the board in the second, nailing a 47-yard field goal, which Chandler Catanzaro answered.
While Michael Vick as filling in for the injured Ben Roethlisberger, it’s common sense that he was just holding the spot until Big Ben returns. Boswell would kick his own 38-yarder, then Bryant would ice the game on a stellar 88-yard TD catch-and-run. They had 469 total yards and moved the ball up and down the field, but three turnovers doomed them on a day their defense did not get them the ball back. “I give him credit for that, he was prepared”. His second throw in the third quarter was an eight-yard touchdown pass to Martavis Bryant.
The Cardinals (4-2) were driving and had a first down at the Steelers 20. Given Jones’ proclivity for throwing picks in practice (I know what I speak of), that makes his performance Sunday all the more remarkable. We just let our guard down just a little bit. At least not for rookie kicker Chris Boswell, who booted four field goals in his first home game, including a 51-yarder in the second half.
Guess what? The Steelers should also go again with the hot hand next week in Kansas City.
