Langer to coach Australia in mid

Darren Lehmann will temporarily hand the reins over to Langer, who is rated Lehmann’s likely successor by Cricket Australia (CA).

Langer will take charge of the national side in a caretaker role while Lehmann takes a break during Australia’s one-day series against the West Indies and South Africa in June.

Langer now coaches the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League, which allows him to balance cricket and family life – something coaching Australia’s Test team on a full-time basis would not allow.

Steve Rixon led the one-day side in India in 2013 before Trevor Bayliss was in charge for the Twenty20 series against South Africa in 2014.

That someone will nearly certainly be Langer, who has turned around the fortunes of Western Australia since taking over there after being an assistant to former Australian head coaches Tim Nielsen and Mickey Arthur.

“I believe he (Langer) will be the next coach of Australia”, Lehmann said in a radio interview in October.

“You want to develop coaches below you and make sure they get opportunities”, he said.

Australian coach Darren Lehmann will take a break from the punishing touring schedule. Langer seems next in line to replace Lehmann in the long run, and this will give Langer and the players a chance to get to know each other.

However, Lehmann said he has no plans to step away from the job in the foreseeable future because he and his team have some aspirations to pursue. This was after he bid adieu to cricket after playing 105 Tests. You’ve got to find a happy medium, try to tick off all the boxes you want to as a coach, and hopefully if you’ve achieved them it’s someone else’s term. “I think his record speaks for itself as a coach. So it’s just a chance to get JL (Langer) into the system and let him have the reins for a trip”.

“We obviously play the conditions really well at home”. “Justin Langer has done an outstanding job, taking his teams to the finals of our three domestic competitions previous year, and winning two of them. This appointment to cover the limited overs series in the Caribbean is a great reward for that excellent work”, Howard said.
