Lansing Police Plan To Purchase 200 Body Cameras
Those supporting the body cameras argue the video, even though it won’t be released publicly, will without a doubt show what happens each time an officer has an encounter with a member of the public.
Each police officer in Waterloo will soon wear a body camera while on duty.
“I don’t think it will completely remove incidents from happening that may be racially motivated or unfair but I think it’s a step in the right direction”, Jonathan Sinton, who agrees with the body cameras, said.
“When you can demonstrate what your officers are doing, whether it’s on video, whether you have people doing ride-a-longs, they get to see how the officers behave and how they interact with the community”, interim police chief James Griffith says. Officials are applying for federal grants to pay for the other half of the camera purchase costs.
After police are done with their shift, they will put the cameras onto a docking station, where the video will download into a server.
Lt. Jim Glennon, a retired Lombard, Ill., police officer, will teach his class “Arresting Communications” in partnership with Hawkeye Community College during two one-day classes.
The LAPD policy – approved by the Police Commission’s 3-1 vote in April – allows officers to review the footage before writing reports or giving statements to internal investigators.
Officers at one North Central Florida police department will now record all of their calls for service with new body cameras.
Paltaka residents interviewed by News4Jax didn’t seem to mind.
At the end of the hearing, however, Saltzman said that although he had questions over the policy, he believed the cameras were “a great idea”.
“If someone lies about what their story was, they can look back at what was recorded”, Rhonda Shivers said.
Whether law enforcement officers should be equipped with the cameras has been a hot topic across the U.S.
“Sometimes those emotions run high enough that they perceive a situation differently than I do, the video helps to give that unbiased account”, Schwindt said.
The new cameras cost the department just under $30,000.
All data is kept for three years, but any video that’s under investigation by the courts or might result in charges will not be released.
