LAPD beefs up security at ‘Straight Outta Compton’ screenings

Ahead of the film’s opening, Universal Pictures offered to reimburse theaters who opted to hire extra security over the weekend, which could be in response to this year’s latest theater shooting incident in Alabama.

The movie theater’s general manager, Kelly Mervyn, said he could not comment when reach by phone Thursday afternoon, just a few hours before the first showing of the movie began at 8 p.m. To celebrate the release of the film Straight Outta Compton, former N.W.A members Dr. Dre and Ice Cube explain the importance of representing their roots on their influential album of the same name for Beats by Dre.

Universal has yet to clarify what kind of support it plans to offer to those select cinemas which have requested extra help. Universal’s music biopic about the iconic rap group N.W.A has been generating strong interest among African-American and Caucasian male audiences. Ice Cube hopes this film would make Easy-E proud.

“Straight Outta Compton” is an exceptional and well-made film. “It’s always some shit you ready to get rid of so you can go back to being creative”. “What about all the other movies that they have had and they didn’t think that they were gonna start violence”, said Kiara Brown. The Sheriff’s Department is also planning on increased presences in its jurisdiction, which includes Compton – the working-class city southwest of Los Angeles that’s become widely known as the origin spot for musicians such as N.W.A, along with being a center of gang activity. Dre, MC Ren and DJ Yella-the surviving members of N.W.A.-have been getting us ready to see the portrayal of their rise to hip hop importance, but the preparation for that moment has been a long time coming.

Ice Cube’s son, O’Shea Jackson Jr., stars as his famous dad in the movie, and he got the ultimate stamp of approval on premiere night in downtown Los Angeles. To give you a comparison, Tom Cruises Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation played in more theaters on its opening Thursday (2,764, to be specific) and only earned $4M.
