LAPD officer-involved shooting at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center Saturday evening
There had been a struggle during the arrest and the 26-year-old had attacked police, injuring two officers, he said.
Police in Los Angeles reported an officer-involved shooting at a hospital in Torrance, California, on Saturday, though there was no word on the circumstances of the shooting, any injuries, or where at the hospital it occurred.
The man was brought to the hospital in Torrance to get checked out after he got into a struggle earlier in the day with officers who were investigating reports of a man throwing bottles and fighting with his neighbors.
“There wasn’t an expectation on the officer’s part that he would attack again like that”, Tingirides added.
The shooting comes at a time of heightened scrutiny over police use of force in the wake of high-profile killings of unarmed black men, which have sparked waves of angry protests across the country since mid-2014.
The man was handcuffed to a gurney, and when the officers briefly took them off, he picked up the chair and began swinging it, Tingirides said.
Nurses and doctors in the emergency room told investigators one of the officers tried to subdue the man with a stun gun, but it wasn’t effective. “A witness stated that the suspect reached for one of the officers’ guns”.
Despite efforts from the ER staff to revive him, he died.
