Large cargo vessel adrift off Haida Gwaii
A large cargo vessel that was adrift off Haida Gwaii is continuing its voyage to the US.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) says the Prince Rupert Coast Guard Maratime Communications hub contacted the MV North Star after noticing its transponder behaving unusually.
A tug boat is en route and the Coast Guard has been dispatched.
The weather conditions are good, Calla said.
A vessel called the North Star broke down about 50 nautical miles off the west coast of the island Tuesday morning. Based on the projected drift, the CCGS Gordon Reid would have rendez-vous with the North Star approximately 0400 hrs on November 25th at a distance of more than 20 nautical miles from shore.
TOTE Maritime’s Puerto Rico division, TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico, operated the ill-fated El Faro cargo ship which sank with the loss of all 33 crew members off the Bahamas in October during Hurricane Joaquin.
