Las Vegas gunman shot security guard before firing at concert-goers
But one constant from the initial stages of the investigation has been authorities’ comments on whether Paddock was believed to have any extremist ties that would have motivated him to carry out the worst mass shooting in American history: the sheriff said officials have still not found links between Paddock and “any known terrorist groups or ideologies”.
At 10:05 p.m., the Las Vegas Strip’s bright lights dimmed for about 10 minutes to mark the passing of exactly a week since a gunman opened fire, killing 58 people and wounding nearly 500 at a country music festival. Campos then radioed for police, who accosted Paddock in his hotel room where he committed suicide.
Las Vegas police officer David Newton told CBS News program “60 Minutes” on Sunday that he entered the room and saw a note on the shooter’s night-stand with numbers that appeared to be created to help his aim.
The detail reflects a change in the shooting timeline police had earlier provided.
She said the 64-year-old accountant who apparently killed himself after the massacre was a close friend, describing him as a humorous person who was generous with his tenants. “Now, they are minute changes”.
Paddock arrived at the Mandalay Bay on September 28, three days before the concert shooting, bringing with him 23 guns, a dozen of them equipped with “bump stocks, ” which allow for more rapid fire.
Las Vegas police investigated the Paddock’s house first on Monday, a day after the mass shooting, they found total 19 guns and some explosive materials from Paddock’s home.
“I’m here to help them move forward with their investigation”, Paddock, 57, told The Las Vegas Review Journal Sunday outside his hotel.
The sound echoed in his window, he said.
“He’s like on retainer, I call it, I guess”, Paddock said when asked about Winkler.
Lombardo added that Paddock fired “well over 200 rounds” into the hallway when the security guard approached.
But Lombardo also said police didn’t know Campos was hit until responding officers arrived on-scene later.
Conrade said the the second breach rattled his hotel room. So I would be comfortable in saying, which I believe, dependent on the splash he made during the shooting would have enabled the first responders to be directing their attentions to other locations which would enable Mr. Paddock to just leave the hotel.
“He actually cared about everybody”, Lisa Crawford, who worked for Paddock managing an apartment he owned from 2006 to 2012, said.
“Currently we do not believe that there is one particular event in the suspect’s life for us to key on”, he said.
Investigators have chased 1,000 leads and examined Paddock’s politics, finances, any possible radicalization and his social behavior – typical investigative avenues that have helped uncover the motive in past shootings.
