Las Vegas To Host Presidential Debate In 2016
The 2016 general election presidential debates will take off at Ohio’s Wright State University.
The vice presidential debate is scheduled for October 4, in Farmville, Virginia.
Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, which has hosted debates in past presidential elections, will serve as a backup site.
Debate formats and moderators will be announced at later dates.
“I am proud of the Mountaineer spirit of collaboration and determination that was exhibited in the application to host a debate”, said WVU President E. Gordon Gee. The university will host the debate in the Ervin J. Nutter Center, which is otherwise home to the school’s basketball and hockey teams. It was picked for a 1996 debate but the event was canceled when the number of debates that year was cut to two from three. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, had written the commission in support of Wright State as host, saying: “When it comes to presidential elections, all eyes turn to Ohio”.
They quite obviously have confidence in us, he told reporters during a brief announcement. This is the sixth time the university has been selected by the CPD to host a debate since 1992, and it will be the fifth debate to be held at the university.
It signals an incredible turnaround for Las Vegas, said Don Snyder, UNLV’s presidential adviser for strategic initiatives. Its primary objective is to sponsor and produce debates for the United States presidential and vice presidential candidates and to undertake research and educational activities relating to the debates.
