Laser pointed at United Flight landing in Newark
At least four pilots flying over New York and New Jersey reported spotting green lasers beamed towards their planes Tuesday night, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
The FAA says one plane was struck by a laser about 20 miles south of Newark Liberty global Airport.
Authorities are investigating six cases of aircraft being hit with laser beams over New York and New Jersey on Tuesday night snd early Wednesday morning, after a spate of 16 incidents on two consecutive nights last week. Both planes were flying at 7,000 feet, the FAA said.
Five minutes later, Shuttle America flight 3482 from Montreal reported a strike at 7,000 feet, seven miles west of Warwick and also en route to Newark.
It’s unclear if all the incidents are related.
At the same moment, United Express flight 5898 from Toronto reported a green laser strike to the left side of the aircraft as it approached Newark.
Two other planes were near Warwick, in Orange County, when they were hit.
Just last week, 11 commercial pilots reported their cockpits illuminated by lasers in the same area – including one who later complained of blurry vision.
The flight landed in Newark at 11:47 p.m.
