Last night in the WNBA Playoffs: The Fever are Finals bound
It seems like the Indiana Fever own the Liberty as much as James Dolan does.
Indiana Fever guard Marissa Coleman (25) drives to the basket past New York Liberty guard Epiphanny Prince, left, during the first half in Game 3 of the WNBA basketball Eastern Conference finals at Madison Square Garden in New York, Tuesday, September 29, 2015.
The Fever will meet the Western Conference champion Minnesota Lynx in the finals, a rematch of the 2012 championship series that Indiana won three games to one for the franchise’s only title.
“On defense, I know I can make a difference”, Catchings said of her decision to take a charge. “To be sitting here means a lot for the organization, for my team”.
“The script definitely wasn’t written for the Indiana Fever to get past the finals”, and Catchings giggled, a superlative athlete who’s already accomplished everything enjoying the found money of her 2015 season.
The former Boiler has led the Indiana Fever to the WNBA Finals in her first season as head coach.
With their backs against the wall for the fourth time in this postseason, Tamika Catchings and company stood tall and staved off elimination. On July 28, their first contest after the All-Star Game, the Fever edged Connecticut by two points. Coleman hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter to help the Fever build their huge lead after Indiana held a 33-22 halftime advantage. Fouled Out-None. Rebounds-Indiana 34 (Larkins 8), New York 41 (Charles 10). But Catchings made her two from the line.
And when Catchings was drafted by Indiana in 2001 – because a torn ACL cut short her senior season, she didn’t play in the WNBA until 2002 – White was a player with the Fever.
Game 1 of the finals will be played Sunday afternoon in Minnesota.
There was one tie and four lead changes. The Liberty kept it going to start the fourth as Wiggins scored the first five points of the period to get New York within 49-45. I take a very big positive from the season.
Suffice to say, Catchings and White know each other extremely well, and they both saw the same things in watching this year’s Fever team evolve.
Barcelona pulled off a dramatic escape to avoid defeat against Bayer Leverkusen, scoring in the 80th and 82nd minutes to turn defeat into a 2-1 home victory. Not when it is the last two to send your team to another round. Larkins drove for two. “Even when we were down 18 in the second game, we all looked at each other and said, ‘We can do this.’ That’s the story”.
A goalkeeping blunder by David Ospina helped Olympiakos beat Arsenal 3-2, leaving the Gunners in real danger of its first group-stage exit in 16 years. Wiggins was the lone Liberty player to hit 50% (3 of 6) from three. They know that when [the Liberty] started coming back that we just had to hit shots.
