Latest weather service forecast calls for freezing rains, icy roads through 1
The National Weather Service at Mount Holly, N.J., has issued a winter weather advisory for Lehigh and Northampton counties from 7 p.m. Monday to 7 a.m. Tuesday for sleet, freezing rain and snow.
The National Weather Service says 1 to 4 inches has fallen from the Albany area northwest to the Mohawk Valley and north to north to the southern Adirondacks.
With a possibility of light overnight rain or sleet for northeast IL (including Lake County), by Monday morning the moisture will build, beginning with snow that will turn to freezing rain by noon. While most locations will see a trace to a tenth of an inch of ice, the higher terrain could see up to a quarter-inch of icing.
It will be mostly cloudy with a high near 39 degrees, and there will be a 20 percent chance of precipitation, according to the website. Expect ice accumulations more in the 1/10 to 1/14 of an inch range.
The rain could be mixed with freezing rain between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m., and switch to rain after 2 a.m. The changeover to rain along the Pennsylvania Turnpike and south will be sooner.
A winter weather advisory kicks in at 8 p.m. Monday and will remain in effect until 1 p.m. Tuesday, the weather service said. Warmer air in the region is expected to turn freezing rain is expected to turn to rain during the mid- to late afternoon.
“I am reminding commuters to take the extra time to get to your destination and to remain mindful of the conditions on the road”.

Few accidents were reported early this morning, although a auto struck a pole in Wales on Ridge Road around 7 a.m., knocking down wires, according to emergency dispatch reports.
Thursday and New Year’s Day are forecast to be mostly cloudy.
