Latino groups call on ‘SNL’ to drop Trump
In a statement released ahead of Trump’s scheduled appearance this weekend, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus said the network’s platform is too influential for a political figure who has made racially offensive remarks about Latinos.
The caucus noted Trump has said that “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best…They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems to us”. Sanchez and other members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus are speaking out against Trump hosting, and there’s been huge demand to boot Trump off the show.
When Trump launched his campaign for the GOP nomination in June, he called Mexicans “rapists” and accused immigrants from the country of “bringing crime” and drugs into the US.
In recent comments, actress and activist Eva Longoria told TheWrap that instead of asking for SNL to dump Trump, Latinos don’t have to watch it. She said the show’s decision to invite Trump is part of “freedom of speech”. Now the evidence is coming in, said Mario Lopez, a Republican and president of the Hispanic Leadership Fund. An ad sponsored by an outside group, People for the American Way, is airing on Spanish-language radio programs in Virginia, urging Hispanics to vote to “shut Trump’s big mouth”.
Trump faced significant backlash over the remarks from Latino community advocates and fellow Republican party members alike. It’s going to be one of the highest-rated shows ever”, Trump said, before signing copies of his new book “Crippled America.
“I’ve noticed the level of anger at Trump’s hosting seems proportional to how seriously a person thinks Trump can actually win”.
The lawmakers’ statement not only called upon NBCUniversal to cancel Trump’s hosted episode, but also on Broadway Video and SNL Executive Producer Lorne Michaels, saying that “racism is not amusing”.
The outlet says that Trump’s television appearances tend to draw in a massive amount of viewership to which it cites the record-breaking views of the first three Republican debates. “I go on Jimmy Fallon, he got his best ratings”. “We’re not trying to get Larry onto ‘Saturday Night Live, ‘ of course”, Lessig’s lawyer admitted, “we just want to protect his equal right to speak to viewers”. Hillary Clinton appeared earlier this season for a cold open sketch alongside Kate McKinnon, who impresonated the Democratic presidential candidate, while Clinton played a bartender.
