Laura Benanti’s Impersonation Of Melania Trump On ‘The Late Show’ Is Iconic
While your 9th grade history and english teachers might say that the above quote is a unusual mash-up of JFK and Charles Dickens – the Late Show’s Stephen Colbert has attributed it to the one, the only, Melania Trump.
But the speechwriting skills of Donald Trump’s campaign cohort have certainly come into question, after Melania Trump gave a speech that lifted more than a few lines from a speech given by First Lady Michelle Obama in 2008.
When Colbert asked Benanti if she wanted Trump to become president, she said, “yeah, not necessarily”, before mouthing the word “no” to the audience.
There’s a precedent for Benanti’s appearance on Tuesday’s episode of The Late Show. Benanti, who has previously discussed her resemblance to the former model, appeared behind a podium, wearing a replica of Melania Trump’s bell-sleeved sheath.
The best part? She tried to conclude with a “Live, from NY, it’s…” but Colbert cut her off before she could say “Saturday Night!”
The sketch also had her borrow lines from everyone from Dr. Seuss to the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. “I would not, could not, with a goat”, she said in reference to Green Eggs and Ham.
Benanti, as Melania, offered her statement about the plagiarism accusations with a new speech.
He continued, “People keep coming up to me and saying, ‘Thank god you’re here.’ And they keep on saying, ‘You’re one of the good ones. I would not, could not on a boat”, she insisted. “Break me off a piece of that Kit-Kat bar”. “You’ve got to fight for your right to party. Oh, and one more thing: Live from NY, it’s Saturday night!”
