Laura Trott the latest victim of Russian data hack
They include Britons Nicola Adams, the 2016 Olympic gold medallist in the women’s boxing flyweight division; Laura Trott, the 2016 Olympic champion in cycling; Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, the Olympic silver medallist in swimming; and Olivia Carnegie-Brown (silver medallist in rowing); Danish bronze swimming medallist Jeanette Ottesen; representatives of Australia Kim Brennan (Olympic rowing champion), Alexander Belonogov (silver medallist in rowing) and cyclist Jack Bobridge; Spaniard Mireia Belmonte Garcia (Olympic swimming champion); German shooter Julian Justus and tennis player Laura Siegemund.
Rowing star Brennan, who won the single sculls at the Rio 2016 Games, has been named by the Fancy Bears hacking group who have been publishing leaked medical records from the World Anti-Doping Agency. There is no suggestion of wrongdoing by any of the individuals whose details have been leaked.
“Yet again, the leaked data relates to confidential therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs) delivered by worldwide sports federations (IFs) and national anti-doping organisations (NADOs)”.
As recently as Wednesday WADA had confirmed athlete data had been leaked by a Russian cyber espionage group with hackers releasing information on 25 athletes from the United States, Germany, Britain, Czech Republic, Denmark, Poland, Romania, and Russia.
“UKAD strongly condemns actions of this nature and we are appalled that five members of Team GB have had their private data published illegally online”, it said.
“It is causing unnecessary and unwarranted worry for the athletes affected”.
“That is a huge security concern and something that I think we should be seriously anxious about”.
WADA has reacted to latest release of medical files by declaring “we must be prepared for more” and is taking guidance from “top cyber security experts” to ensure their system remains secure.
“We spent yesterday contacting Team GB athletes about the possibility of their TUE data being released and we will continue to keep our athletes and stakeholders apprised as more information becomes available”.
“Stakeholders should know that WADA is being consulted and taking action based on intelligence and advice from the very highest levels of global law enforcement”, a statement read. These athletes have obtained TUEs through a robust and independent system.
He added: “It seems as if healthy athletes are taking drugs legally that are prohibited for others, and people who are clearly suffering from serious illnesses, major disabilities, are suspected of taking some kind of substances and banned from the Paralympic Games”.
Russian Federation continues to deny any involvement with the Fancy Bears hacking but President Vladimir Putin said the leaked information would be of interest to the worldwide community.
Putin said: “It raises a lot of questions”.
“In such instances, they may be granted a TUE, which gives them permission to take a substance or use a method”.
The most recent leak, which exposes documents held by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada), reveals that cyclist Trott required a TUE for the substances salmeterol, salbutamol and fluticasone propionatebetween 2009 and 2013.
